Why should I study this subject?

Performing Arts (Acting) is a practical course that prepares students for the world of acting. This is a very practical course that involves a lot of acting. There are no written examinations.

What will I study

Mandatory units:
• investigating practitioners work
• Developing skills and techniques for live performance
• Group performance workshop

Plus a range of optional units.

During the course students will study many different dramatic genres. This programme is designed for those interested in continuing their study of performing arts in higher education or who want to become an actor.

What skills do I need?

  • Good acting ability, movement skills and communication skills
  • A good standard of English
  • The ability to work collaboratively
  • The ability to lead when necessary
  • The ability to work hard under pressure


How will I be taught?

  • Tutorial-type teaching
  • Practical work, in small groups or individually
  • Master classes
  • Workshops
  • Performances


How will I be assessed?

Assessment is through performance and written coursework. In addition to your teacher, the college will be allocated an external verifier who will assess your work.

During performance units, students will be required to rehearse in groups outside lesson time.

One of the studied units will be externally verified.

What will the course prepare me for?

Performing Arts students can go on to do a variety of things. Some go on to study Performing Arts at specialist schools, colleges and universities. Many go into the Performing Arts Industry. Others have gone on to a whole host of other courses, ranging from Psychology to IT, to English to Art/Fashion, to Mathematics.

How much private study should I expect to do?

BTEC Extended Certificate in Performing Arts – Acting requires two/three hours per week of additional study, but much of this is taken up with rehearsing.

What materials will I need to purchase?

You will be expected to attend the theatre visits and there is the opportunity to go on a residential trip abroad and to London.

What is the exam board?


This subject is for you if…
you want to enter the performing arts industry or be a professional actor or performer.

This subject is not for you if…
you don’t like performing and have no interest in following this career path.
