Graham Crossley – Careers and Higher Education Manager
During a year out after A Levels Graham worked in Insurance and for the Civil Service. He then took a degree in History, Politics and International Relations at what is now called Coventry University. After graduating he worked for a short time in the newspaper industry. He then started working for the Careers Service in Salford. Subsequently he took a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance at Nottingham Trent University. Graham then worked for Lincolnshire Careers Service until moving to Wakefield Careers Service. During his time with Wakefield he was in charge of Pontefract Careers Office and Team Leader for the Careers Advisers in Castleford, Pontefract and Hemsworth.
Graham also worked at least one day a week in NEW College. He started working full-time for NEW College in 1999. Graham’s interests are all sports, particularly Golf and Rugby League and he also still manages to play the occasional game of football. His claim to fame is playing football on a number of professional grounds including Manchester United and also appearing in the cage on TISWAS.
Emma Chappell-Davies – NEW College Careers Adviser
After completing her degree in Applied Social Sciences at what is now called Lincoln University, Emma spent a couple of years travelling and working around the world. She visited a wide range of countries including Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Thailand. En route, she met her future husband a New Zealander. On returning to the United Kingdom Emma worked in a residential college for young adults with severe learning disorders. She then completed her Diploma in Careers Guidance at the West of England University in Bristol.
Her first position in Careers Guidance was working in Penzance for the Cornwall Careers Service. After a career break to have children, she returned to work at Guidance Services in Pontefract, which included coming in to Pontefract NEW College for 1 day/week. Her duties at NEW College includes admission interviews as well as guidance interviews.
Karen Smitten – NEW College Careers Adviser/Oxbridge Coordinator
After completing a degree in French at Hull University, Karen spent a year in the travel industry before joining Barnsley Careers Service. She then moved to the West Midlands to take up a post as trainee Careers Adviser. Having completed her Diploma in Careers Guidance, Karen worked for Birmingham Careers Service before moving back to Yorkshire. Having taken a break, Karen returned to work as an Adult Careers Adviser in Wakefield. She joined NEW College in June 2006. Her duties include admissions and guidance interviews
