Principal’s Winter Update – 2015

Dear Parent

As we embark on the second half term of the year I wanted to take the opportunity to update you on some forthcoming key dates in the college calendar.

Pauline HagenAll students are to be congratulated on the way they have settled in to college life either as Year 13 returners or as Year 12 starters. Their enthusiasm and engagement is noted by all staff, and their commitment to study is reflected in some very impressive monthly assessment results. We are grateful for all the ways in which you support our students, which really does enable them to get the very best out of college life, and to achieve outstanding results.

Mock Examinations, 3-11 December
We are approaching the internal exam period, and I thought it would be helpful to let you know that during this week all AS and A level students will attend lessons as normal. We want to replicate as far as possible the external exams that students will sit in summer, and therefore it is imperative that the mock exam is taken extremely seriously. We will be working with students to make sure they are aware of the importance of these exams, and are grateful for your support in reinforcing this at home.

Parents of Year 12 students will have the opportunity to discuss the mock examination performance at Parents’ Evening on 21 January.

Cedar, our student tracking system, is working very effectively and I’m grateful to parents who use it regularly since, again, this supports the work of teachers and tutors in ensuring all students attend, work hard and achieve their potential. Please let the IT Helpdesk know if you are experiencing difficulty logging into your Cedar account. ( Helpdesk email). You can use your login to review the results of the mock exams, and if you are a Year 13 parent, you can view the “three quarter position grade”, which takes account of student performance in Year 12 external exams and the results of the Year 13 mock exam to indicate current overall performance for Year 13 students on the basis of all data available so far. This information will be available on Cedar at the start of the new term.

The Excellence Academy Evening
Our annual event for Year 11 students will take place on 7 January. If you have a child in Year 11 who is predicted to achieve outstanding GCSE results and has ambitions to progress to a prestigious university, then this information session will be helpful. Speakers include former New College students who are now studying at Oxford and Cambridge.

Christmas Variety Show
Our annual seasonal celebration on 15 December at 7:00pm includes contributions from students of Music, Drama and Dance and promises to be a fantastic showcase of college’s student talent across the performing arts.

Term Dates 2016-17
Term dates can be found on the college website. The new academic year will start for new Year 12 students on Thursday 8 September and for Year 13 returners on Friday 9 September 2016.

End of term, 17 December 2015
Please note that term finishes on Thursday 17 December 2015, not on 18 December as originally planned. This is because students are attending lessons throughout the exam period, and teachers have a very short “window” to mark scripts and upload results before the college Christmas closure.

Year 12 Parents Evening, 21 January 2016
We will be holding our Parents Evening for all Year 12 students on Thursday 21 January 2016 4.30pm – 8.30pm. You will be able to book your own appointments online that are convenient to you. We will be sending you a letter the first week back in the New Year with instructions and login details.

College re-opens on Monday 4 January 2016.

If you have any queries about the information provided here, please contact college on 01977 702139.

Once again, many thanks for your support for all our students.

I wish you all a very happy Christmas and look forward to another year of collaborative support for our students.

Very best wishes

Pauline Hagen
Executive Principal
