NEW College Students Explore Malta

Over October half-term NEW College students and staff spent 15 days in Malta teaching, coaching and playing sports in local Maltese schools.

Students had the opportunity to go into schools and coach sports to local children. This gave them an idea of how the Maltese approach sports and how their attitude differs to that of ours in the UK. Pegah Moulana said: “It was very different to the English attitude, they focus on the importance of sport in their daily routine.”

During the coaching sessions NEW College students took the chance to show the Maltese students different sports other than football. The basketball, cricket and wheelchair basketball teams all had an opportunity to show off and coach their sports to the Maltese schools.

NEW College was invited to a disability day where they helped mentally and physically disabled children with different sports. Four NEW College students even took some of the disabled students on a bike ride.

They also challenged the Maltese national teams in football, basketball, boys cricket and wheelchair basketball. They won 3 games and received many trophies from the Maltese clubs all in the honour of friendship.

In their down-time, NEW College students had the chance to experience Maltese culture with visits to Valetta, Mdina and various other tourist hot-spots. Pegah said: “I had a fantastic time in Malta, it was great to be able to work with the Maltese students and show them different sports. Malta is a beautiful country and it was nice to be in the sun for two weeks!”
