New College Media students work alongside Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust

Talented media students at New College, Pontefract got the chance to film two original pieces of work for the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust. The videos are part of a scheme to develop best practice within the Trust for both work experience students and staff.
The students worked alongside nurses, doctors, administration staff and consultant surgeons to film, edit and produce both an induction video for work placements, which will be hosted on the Mid Yorkshire Trust website, and an additional training video for an End of Life Care Plan.
This involved students filming a very realistic discussion about a patient’s last few days/hours which will be used by all hospital staff to ensure the End of Life Care Plan is followed. The completed pieces have been viewed by the Trust’s communications department and have been given the green light for broadcast.
The videos premiered last month and were shown to an invited audience at the Trust’s educational department, where the students were praised for their professionalism and hard work.
The work is part of the ongoing programme to get media students work experiences with real clients, a real brief and a fixed deadline.
Anna Levick, Head of Media at New College, said: “For both projects the staff of Mid Yorks have had the highest praise for the students paying particular attention to their professionalism, hard work, good humour and sensitivity. They have been rewarded with the satisfaction of making a high quality product for a very satisfied client, and a small gift voucher by way of a thank you.”
Jane Dacre, Macmillan End of Life Facilitator for the Mid Yorkshire Hospital Trust, said: “We were extremely pleased with the students at New College for their dedication and hard work at providing an educational DVD for the use of health professionals around end of life care. Unless a health professional has experienced end of life care it can be difficult to understand the importance of ‘getting it right’. Trying to engage health professionals in education especially around end of life care can be a difficult task. The production of this DVD has ensured that learning can be a positive environment. The students produced a professional DVD which will not only be used throughout the trust, but across many other trusts across the country.”
