New College sports students compete in Malta

Sports students at New College Pontefract enjoyed a tour in sunny Malta over half term which included coaching youngsters and competing against other clubs.

Following an 18 day visit to Malta, 28 students from New College Pontefract achieved their Europass Mobility Award.They taught children sports and games in Maltese Schools and in the Maltese Community Sports Clubs. In one of the sessions, 140 three and four year olds were taught a variety of developmental skills, including running, jumping, catching and gymnastics, which was quite a challenge as there were 17 different nationalities in the group.

Another interesting and challenging session for the students was when 300 students from a variety of schools were taught camp craft, tent erection, tennis skills, athletics and team building games.

 

Fixtures included New College Pontefract Men’s football team against St. Andrews under 17s and Melita under 17s. New College Woman’s Netball match against Melleih Ladies and Malta under 17s. The Men’s team then played their first cricket match against Battersea Badgers Cricket Club (BBCC) and Woodlands Cricket Club. The last fixture on tour was the Woman’s football match against Luxol Woman’s under 17s.

 

Joe Tanti, the Maltese Sports Officer, commented:  “Pontefract students delivered exciting, challenging and interesting opportunities to the Maltese schoolchildren, overcoming language barriers with great demonstrations.”
