New College Pontefract has been recognised by the Association for Physical Education, who have awarded the college an afPE Quality Mark with Distinction, for the college’s PE, sport and physical activity provision, marking the department out as one of the best in the country.
The award, which the college also secured in 2017, lasts for three years and recognises the outstanding achievement students make on the college’s PE and Sport courses along with the college’s sports leadership programmes, as well as reflecting the significant range of extra-curricular sporting activity taking place with students. The award also spotlights Tom Shepherd, the Director of Sport, and the whole subject team who are behind the department’s success.
“They often say sport is a team game,” said Tom. “Well, that is entirely true with my department. This award is a reflection of the hard work, energy and enthusiasm everyone brings to the job. We genuinely love doing what we do, and we are delighted to see our students flourish and prosper.”
The award also reflects the support the department gets from the college’s senior management, who fully recognise “the massive impact which the department has on the personal development of the students.”
