New College brings together young and old with its summer fayre

New College Pontefract hosted a summer fayre for local care home residents and primary school children this week, with stalls, music, cakes and sweets provided by staff and students from the town’s sixth form college.

With the sun smiling down, residents from Vicarage Court, Newfield Lodge, Walton Manor and MHA Communities housing mingled with Year 6 pupils from St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. Both young and old enjoyed the chance to soak a victim in the stocks, play traditional fairground games, and enjoy live music from the college’s Performing Arts students. Organised by the Health and Social Care department’s staff and students, all the participants were able to win raffle tickets, with a range of prizes from toys to sweets to vouchers from Farmer Copley’s.

“It went really well,” said Claire Baron, one of the organisers. “Everyone had a great time in the sunshine, and our students really enjoyed working with members of the community.”

“We are delighted to be able to run this event,” said Gabby Jones, Assistant Principal. “New College takes its role as a force for social cohesion very seriously. Finding ways to bring people together across the generations is always important.”
