New College student receives gold DofE award from royal family at Buckingham Palace

New College Pontefract student, Amy Middler, has received her DofE gold award in a ceremony held at Buckingham Palace in London. The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award (DofE) requires a range of skills, which are broken down into 5 main sections, Physical, Skills and Volunteering which take roughly a year to complete depending on previous awards achieved, 2×4 day hiking expeditions and a residential experience.

Amy said, “The Gold Duke of Edinburgh award (DofE) has been one of my best achievements. It has taught me that in order to achieve a goal, hard work and dedication is required. Despite it being extremely challenging at times the feeling of relief when reaching the campsite or the bus on the last day made me realise the success it brings. It brought great pride to me when I went to Buckingham Palace to be awarded this by the royal family, this and the expeditions is something I will never forget and I would really recommend the programme!

Linda Ripley, Amy’s Progress Tutor at the college, said, “Amy has been a student at New College Pontefract for the last 2 years, and prior to that she was at the Kings’ School. Amy is a hardworking and committed student with an excellent attendance record and out of college she takes part in a variety of activities, one being The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. After college Amy has been offered a place at Leeds University to study a degree in Geography/Geology, I am sure with her passion for subjects and her mature approach to her studies that she will do extremely well.
