The sweet sound of success – grade 8 exam perfection for New College students

New College has seen three students achieve Grade 8 in their respective disciplines this term.

Myvany Smith achieved top marks in her Grade 8 flute exam with a distinction. An accomplished musician, Myvany has already achieved Grade 8 in the saxophone, Grade 8 with distinction in the recorder, along with Grade 6 in bassoon, double bass and clarinet.

Myvanwy is also the assistant musical director for The Doncaster Recorder Ensemble, and is a member of the Sheffield Music Academy. She also plays in The Doncaster Youth Jazz Orchestra and The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra.

Phoebe Lloyd and Rosa Kincaid have also achieved a Grade 8 in musical theatre singing. Remarkably, Phoebe not only achieved a distinction, but she only lost 6 marks in her entire exam.

Other music students have also done remarkably well. Clare Jennings achieved a Grade 7 merit in the viola; Lydia Preston achieved Grade 5 merit in singing, and a Grade 5 for music theory; and Caitlin Bellas achieved a Grade 5 merit in music theory.

These students and many others from New College will be performing at Wakefield Cathedral on April 19th as part of the cathedral’s lunchtime concert series. A regular contributor to the cathedral’s concert series, New College students have in the past been singled out by audience members as one of the high points in the calendar.
