Best in the North of England for the second year running!

The latest set of figures from the DfE’s Skills Funding Agency have been released this month, revealing that New College Pontefract has the third highest achievement rate of any sixth form college in the country. This means that for the second year running, the college is the best sixth form college in the North of England.

Achievement rates, formerly known as success rates, are used by the government to measure which students both stay on a course till the end and pass that course. The outstanding sixth form college has an overall achievement rate of 94.8% for the academic year 2014/15. This is calculated by multiplying the retention rate of 97.8% with the overall pass rate of 97.0%, proving that New College students make outstanding progress during their two years.

Also rated the best in the report was the sixth form’s study support team. The team work incredibly hard behind the scenes to help students maximise their educational achievements during their time at the College. Support is provided in different ways, including, small groups, one to one or in-class, according to the needs and wishes of the student. The college strongly promote a policy of inclusion so specialist support is available at all times for students.

Learner Progression, Learning Support and LRC Manager, Jeff Finnigan said: “We are absolutely delighted with these figures, which are a testament to the hard work of our students and staff. The key to this achievement can be attributed to the individualised support students receive in their transition from school to college, through their time at New College, and their progression beyond.  Teachers, Study Support Staff and Progress Tutors show great commitment and passion in helping to ensure students reach their potential. The success of our students, whatever their needs, is an outstanding feature of the college and puts us first nationally.”

The only two colleges in the country to beat New College Pontefract’s figures were in Harrow and Cambridge.

The Principal, Pauline Hagen, said: “We’re very proud of the achievement of all our students. As an inclusive sixth form college, to be outperforming so many selective independent schools and sixth form colleges with extremely high entry requirements is fantastic to see.”

She added: “All the results are testament to the quality and passion of our teachers and the hard work and commitment of our talented students.”
