England cap for New College student

New College sport student Oliver Fox has successfully been selected to represent the England’s U18 Rugby Union team.

Ollie, who studies A-Level PE, Psychology and History, has already played against France and Scotland and is set to play Wales, later this month. He will then tour with the team in Wales in April where he will be playing against Canada, Ireland and Scotland.

The section was a gruelling process. Players like Oliver are nominated by their academies to attend developmental national camps throughout the year for national coaches to observe them against other potential international players.

Players are also monitored through the academy league games.

The 18 year-old was successfully selected from the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy and the final U18 squad was chosen in February based on performances on camp and in the league.

Oliver is now hoping to be selected to go on tour to South Africa in August where the team will play against their national side as well as meet France again. After signing a contract with Yorkshire Carnegie last year, Oliver is hoping go on to study at Leeds Beckett University alongside playing rugby.

Oliver said: “I am well supported at home and greatly appreciate that my parents have given up many evenings and weekends over the years to ensure I am where I need to be. NCP has been outstanding in supporting me throughout the past two years so that I could balance my rugby commitments and A-Level work. They have allowed me time off to attend national camps. The support from my teachers has been excellent. Everyone has been very flexible and allowed extra time for me to complete any work and also spent their own time helping me catch up. Not only that, they have shown great interest in how I am getting on.”

He added: “My aim is to be selected for England U20s and be part of the squad that plays in the world championships in summer 2018. It’s a real honour to represent and captain my country but I take nothing for granted and will continue to work hard and hope that it is the start of a fulfilling rugby career.”
