New College Pontefract tries to ensure it provides full support to students throughout their time at college, encouraging them when considering progression onto university, apprenticeships and employment.
A recent example of a student who has benefitted from this is Thomas Shorthouse, a Year 13 student who has just finished two years at New College. The support provided to Tom from the careers team and curriculum staff helped encourage him to apply for and successfully gain entry to a prestigious summer school. He has been accepted into The Purcell School, a highly regarded music specialist school.
Music teacher Michelle Colvill, who has been particularly supportive of Tom, said “Tom submitted two compositions for his application and clearly the teachers were impressed by his creativity. Tom works really hard in his spare time to perfect his compositional skills and truly deserves this fantastic opportunity. Well done!”.
