Department for Education update regarding the availability of second vaccinations for 16 and 17 year olds

The Department for Education have provided an update about the availability of second vaccinations for 16 and 17 year olds (see below).

16 and 17 year olds will be able to make bookings for a second vaccination at local vaccination centres from Monday 22nd November as long as there is a gap of at least 12 weeks since your first vaccination or infection with COVID-19.

There are currently no plans for second vaccinations to be offered onsite but you will be updated if this is offered by local public health teams.

Vaccination continues to be the best way to reduce the risk of serious illness caused by COVID-19, please take the time to carefully consider whether to get vaccinated. The NHS provide information about vaccination at Coronavirus Vaccine Information. Please note the vaccine information website is not updated to show 2nd vaccine availability for 16 & 17 year olds at this time (17/11/21).

Immunisation issues advice on second dose of COVID-19 vaccination for 16 to 17 year olds

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that all healthy 16 to 17 year olds should be offered a second dose of the Pfizer vaccine. The decision is based on a review of the latest evidence and has been accepted by the Government.

The second vaccine dose should be given 12 weeks or more following the first vaccine dose. For those in this age group who have had the COVID-19 infection, the second vaccine dose should be given 12 weeks or more following the first vaccine dose, or 12 weeks following a positive COVID-19 test result – whichever is later. Those ‘at risk’ will continue to be offered a second dose 8 weeks after their first dose.

16 and 17 year olds will not be vaccinated through the schools programme, but through vaccination centres, community pharmacies and GP led primary care network sites. The national booking service will be available from Monday 22 November for 16 and 17 year olds to book their vaccine.
