The Art Foundation students at New College Pontefract were given a private audience with the internationally renowned Portuguese artist, Joana Vasconcelos, who is presently exhibiting at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Having flown in from Portugal Friday morning she kindly gave 2 hours of her time to take the students on a tour of her work in the Underground gallery with a Q&A session at the end. The students were given an insight into how she creates and designs work at her base in Lisbon. She has a team of 50 makers and designers who all contribute to the finished sculptures and much of the work reflects her Portuguese heritage. Initially a jeweller, she now exhibits large scale works all over the world.
What the students said:
Noah Cowcill – ‘An incredible insight into the workings of an Artist’s mind.’
Alexia Palmer – ‘Meeting Joana was a very fulfilling experience. The way she demonstrated her work and expressed herself as an artist has inspired me to do the same for my future career.’
Calysta Lockwood – ‘Hearing the meaning behind the artwork from the artist herself was very interesting and inspiring and was a great insight into the ideas and work behind the sculptures.’
