On Friday, 14th February, just before the half-term break, we had the honour of hosting a special event in college with Pontefract Civic Society. This special occasion saw key local figures gather to witness the unveiling of a blue plaque commemorating the life and legacy of Barbara Castle.
Barbara Castle, born in 1910, was an influential Labour Party politician who spent part of her formative years in Pontefract. During her childhood, Barbara attended Love Lane School before moving on to Pontefract & District Girls’ High School—which is now New College Pontefract.
The event featured several speeches organised by Paul Cartwright, Chair of Pontefract Civic Society. Our Principal, Vicky Marks, opened the proceedings by welcoming the audience and reflecting on how our college ethos would resonate with Barbara’s public service. Three of our A-level Politics students then shared heartfelt accounts of Barbara’s life and accomplishments, describing her as “an inspirational woman.”

The Mayor of Wakefield, Councillor Darren Byford, contributed by discussing Barbara’s early years, while Yvette Cooper, MP for Pontefract, Castleford, Knottingley, and Altofts, delivered an inspiring address highlighting Barbara’s pivotal achievements. These included her role in bringing in the Equal Pay Act, which addressed wage disparities between men and women, and bringing in the seat belt and breathalyser, both of which have undoubtedly saved countless lives.

The event culminated in the unveiling of the blue plaque by Yvette Cooper MP and Vicky Marks. The plaque will be proudly displayed on the wall outside the college’s reception, serving as a lasting tribute to Barbara Castle’s extraordinary contributions. Students, staff, visitors, and members of the community will now have the opportunity to learn about her legacy for generations to come.
We extend a huge thank you to Pontefract Civic Society for partnering with us on this meaningful initiative. It was truly a privilege to honour such an iconic figure in the history of our community.
